ADCHEM 2024 follows the tradition of symposia held in Toulouse (1991), Kyoto (1994), Banff (1997), Pisa (2000), Hong Kong (2003), Gramado (2006), Istanbul (2009), Singapore (2012), Whistler (2015), Shenyang (2028) and Venice (2021).
The 2023 CSChE will be held in Calgary from October 29th to November 1st. This year, the Systems and Control Division Program will be organized as a Symposium by Prof Biao Huang and Prof Nicolas Hudon.

The invited keynote speaker for this year is Prof Prodromos Daoutidis (University of Minnesota) who will present a talk titled “Efficient solution of large-scale control and optimization problems: network science meets artificial intelligence”.
The DG Fischer lecture will be delivered by Prof Vinay Prasad (University of Alberta) who will present a talk titled “Decoding reaction complexity using process systems engineering”. Please join me in congratulating Vinay for the award!

The Department of Chemical Engineering (ChE) at the University of Waterloo invites applications from qualified candidates for a 12 month postdoctoral fellowship appointment in Optimal Operation of Emerging Energy and intensified Systems under the supervision of Professors Luis Ricardez-Sandoval.
The aim of this project is to perform optimal integration of advanced energy and CO2 capture systems applying process intensification principles. The candidates for this position must have solid expertise in computer programming, chemical process optimization, process control, and first-principles modelling of chemical systems. In particular, the candidate must have expertise in solving nonlinear dynamic optimization problems using state-of-the-art optimization software. A Ph.D. degree and evidence of excellence in research are required. Successful applicants are expected to maintain an active program of research in areas closely related to optimal process integration of energy and chemical systems. Prof. Thomas A. Adams II in the Process and Power Program, Department of Energy and Process Engineering (EPT) at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is seeking a PhD Candidate in Sustainable Energy Process Systems. One of the key goals is to identify the most promising technologies for implementation as part of a new Trans-Atlantic Energy Bridge to provide new sources of clean and reliable energy to Europe, and subsequently make recommendations to governments for development based on critical analysis and data.
The research will require the use of eco-technoeconomic analysis (eTEA) methodologies to evaluate candidate energy production, conversion, storage, and transportation processes and systems to quantify their potential economic, environmental, or sociopolitical value of various technologies in comparison to alternative solutions. Key research elements will include the conceptual design, synthesis, and simulation of candidate commercial scale production and/or storage processes currently at technology readiness level 6 or lower; bottom-up economic analyses to estimate costs as a function of geography and markets; dynamic life cycle assessment (LCA) of commercial supply chain implementation; optimal design under uncertainty techniques, and big-picture assessments made within the context of the triple bottom line of sustainability. The development and application of applicable standards, especially concerning comparative eTEAs, will also play an important role.
Since the scope of the Trans-Atlantic Energy Bridge is broad, the candidate will be expected to narrow their focus to the most promising technologies and suggest innovative new solutions using chemical engineering approaches.

For this recruitment, the Department seeks candidates with research expertise in the engineering, analysis and modeling of complex bio/chemical systems across multiple scales to facilitate sustainable zero-net-carbon manufacturing of bioproducts and biologics, chemicals, polymers, and/or fuels, power systems and energy. These systems are often highly interconnected, dynamic and multidimensional, and advanced tools are required to realize their sustainable design, fundamental understanding, and optimization. Research approaches employed by the successful candidate may include applications of big data analytics and other supercomputing methods to develop fundamental multiscale models based in part on conservation principles for process–product design, synthesis and integration using new machine learning technologies; development of data-driven algorithms and AI-powered decision-making tools to enable optimization of highly complex bio/chemical systems; and/or experimental and ultra-scale-down frameworks that facilitate viable testing of putative sustainable technologies (energy usage, life-cycle effects, costs and processing times, etc.).
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. (conferred by the date of appointment) in Chemical Engineering or in a closely related discipline and must either be registered, or be eligible to register with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia. Registration is required within five years of appointment. Demonstration of clear potential to establish a high-impact research program, as well as to effectively teach and train future generations of Chemical and Biological Engineers, is an expectation of the successful candidate.
